Musical Interlude: Oh, What a Night (December 1963)(1975)

Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons made a modest comeback on the charts in the mid-70's, starting with "Oh, What a Night (December 1963)", released in 1975 Valli, of course, would go solo and score with the theme from "Grease" three years later.

With Clint Eastwood's adaptation of the muscial, "Jersey Boys", opening this weekend, I thought this might a little something to tie you over.........

This song - while good, always seemed the antithesis of the classic Four Seasons song. The unnecessary 70s disco effects, the content (guy loses virginity 12 years earlier and reminisces), and an odd, sad time in US history (the events of the song occur less than a month after the JFK assassination).

For the record, I saw Jersey Boys at The Venetian. I sort of liked it (as I love music from The Four Seasons) but I was put off by the bad language used and how unflattering it was with the groups' mobster connections as well as the violent temper of Frankie Valli himself. When my family and I went to see it, we imagined it would be more akin to "Beatlemania" which had essentially recreated the Beatles concert experience on stage. The show was a little rougher than that.

How much is carried over into the film I have yet to know, but I do know Eastwood did right by hiring many of the stage performers rather than hiring some Hollywood actors.

The show is still playing nightly at The Paris Hotel.

The movie is rated R, so the language is being retained from the stage show. Haven't seen the movie yet, but it piques my interest.
